In addition to decades of volunteering and community involvement to go along with his professional tenure as an attorney, Mr. Porter has recently been involved with the revitalization of Lamar Porter Field. The baseball field, named for Mr. Porter’s great-uncle, was originally built in the 1930s as a WPA project for the Little Rock Boys Club. The facility is on the Arkansas Historical Register and work continues to restore and upgrade it.
“The most rewarding part of my volunteerism is from being able to continue the Good Work that was started generations ago by family members who desired to provide a recreational facility where kids and families could gather,” Mr. Porter said. “They would be proud to know that their gift expanded over the years to include serving many disadvantaged youth as part of an organization that later encompassed boys and girls clubs in central Arkansas.”
Mr. Porter also encouraged his fellow attorneys to stay active in their communities. “If you want to get involved, then find a cause that you want to support— a cause that will make you feel good about yourself. Volunteering for the sake of volunteering does not make a lot of sense unless you have some stake in the goals of the organization,” he said. “Somewhere there is an organization that has a niche for you and will give you back all and more than what you invest.”
