Chemical Tanker Explosion on Ouachita County Highway Results in 1 Fatality, 3 Injured

Location: Highway 278 west of Camden, AR

Details: On March 27th., 2019, the brakes of a tanker truck carrying ammonium nitrate allegedly caught fire around 6:40 a.m. that morning. According to news reports, the fire eventually resulted in detonation of the substance inside of the tanker truck and an explosion that killed the truck driver and injured three firefighters on the scene.

Suspected remains of 63 year old Randall McDougal of El Dorado, who was employed by Blann Trucking Company, have been sent to the Arkansas state crime lab for positive identification. The injured firefighters were taken to area hospitals as a precautionary measure.

The explosion left a 15-foot deep crater in the road, leading to the closure of Highway 278.
