Pope County Sheriff Aaron Duvall has confirmed that 26-year-old Atkins resident Nicki Settlemire died on Memorial Day after a Union Pacific train struck her 1998 Ford Explorer at a railroad crossing located near the intersection of State Highway 64 and Avenue Four Southeast on the east side of Atkins. Union Pacific and the Atkins Police Department continued to investigate the accident late Monday afternoon when contacted by The Courier News. Ms. Settlemire is the second person killed at that crossing since No
James Anderson was struck and killed at the same crossing on November 6, 2009. Our deepest condolences go to the family of Ms. Settlemire.
