Getting to know Lamar Porter
Getting to know Lamar Porter …
I became a lawyer because… I wanted to help people, but I probably starting leaning in that direction as a child after watching numerous episodes of Perry Mason with my grandfather.
What I like most about the law is… the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life, especially when that someone is a handicapped child and I am able to significantly improve his or her quality of life.
When you need an attorney… look for qualifications and experience. Look for a firm that has the financial ability to cover the necessary expenses to pursue your case. Look for an attorney who returns your telephone calls and who keeps you advised on developments in your case. Look for an attorney who not only appears to be knowledgeable in the area of law, but who can explain what you face in terms that you can understand. Finally, find a lawyer who makes you feel comfortable and in whom you can have trust and confidence.
My most rewarding case… involved a child by the name of Zeke. Zeke suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen during labor, causing cerebral palsy. Zeke could not (and still cannot) walk or talk. He is entirely dependent upon his parents for care. Suit was filed in a conservative Arkansas county and was vigorously defended. Doctors who were involved in Zeke's treatment testified for the defense. His parents received death threats while the litigation was pending. During the two-week trial the case appeared each day in the local paper. Local doctors, nurses and hospital employees came and watched the trial, sitting on one side of the packed courtroom while supporters of the family sat on the other side of the courtroom.
We won-the only malpractice verdict against a doctor in that County, and one of only a few malpractice verdicts against a physician in a birth injury case in the State of Arkansas. Interestingly enough one of the defenses was that Zeke was so injured that he would only live a few years, so the jury didn't need to award large sums of money for his future care. Thank goodness Zeke is still alive today—a teenager! While the amount that the jury awarded was still conservative, it has helped provide Zeke a better life. I still speak with his parents from time to time and am honored to have remained their friend over the years.
My most disappointing case was… one where the client turned down a large settlement offer during trial and the jury unexpectedly found for the defense.
I joined The Brad Hendricks Law Firm because… Brad and I worked together as attorneys at a former firm and I knew that he was honest, ethical, and that he feels just like I do that clients deserve a dedicated attorney who really cares.
What makes The Brad Hendricks Law Firm different from other lawyers? Each of the lawyers at The Brad Hendricks Law Firm has a sincere interest in aggressively, but ethically, representing you. In these days where “lawyer bashing” has become popular, we feel that we need to be an example to show people that being a lawyer is still an honorable profession and that there are still ethical lawyers who truly care as much or more about justice for their clients as they do about collecting their fees.
Someone I really admire is… my wife. She never graduated college but she runs her own business and is smart as any person that I know.
My favorite music is… old soul and classic rock.
What is your favorite word? "Fair" That's what all people deserve in life.
What is a word you hate? "Tort Reform." Big business claims that our judicial system needs reform, when really they want to protect themselves and allow profits to take priority over people.
A sound or noise I love is… falling rain.
A sound or noise I hate is… someone crying out of despair.
My favorite trivia fact is… that no laws "reforming" the judicial system have ever resulted in insurance companies lowering their rates.
Outside of my family, my most treasured belongings are… my dogs, an old Beagle named "Little Bit" and a young spastic Jack Russell Terrier named "Missey."
When not at work, I enjoy… fishing in the small lake behind my home, downloading music on the internet, and taking movies and photos with my digital cameras.
